Paper marbling
I first came across paper marbling via a homework assignment in Harvard AM225 back in spring 2019. In that problem, we were asked to simulate paper marbling. Although my results were far from real marbled papers, my fascination with this ancient art form sparked.
Since then, I have been teaching myself how to marble, both for fun and for research. For the art of marbling, I was fortunate to later take classes with Cristina Hajosy, Barb Skoog, and the legendary Chena River Marblers. Working with professional marblers not only improves my marbling skills but also helps me identify research questions that are of interest to both the artistic and scientific communities. For the science of marbling, I work with Prof. John Bush, Saverio Spagnolie, and Chris Rycroft on the hydrodynamics of marbling. Our video on our initial findings of the physics of interfacial phenomena, spreading, and mixing won the 2023 Gallery of Fluid Motion Milton van Dyke Award. We are currently developing a marbling simulation that incorporates the interfacial phenomena, and continuing our research into the many mesmerizing fluid dynamics questions in marbling art.
